Cheque intended as a brickbat

By Julian Slade

Andy Dunn's a bit of a joker. The Grey Lynn graphic artist is well known for clowning around but his latest stunt is deadly serious.
Some of anti-Metrowater campaigners have refused to pay bills or have reconnected their water supply after its been turned off, but Mr Dunn's brick cheque is an unusual protest against water charges.
"I believe in paying my way but I think Metrowater is a great mistake " he says "My protest may be totally abstract but a point is being made."
He sought legal advice to ensure his brick cheque is a legitimate way of paying his water and wastewater charges and recommends others disenchanted rate-payers should follow suit.
"I'd like to see this start something. People could write cheques on fence posts and even animals. If hundreds of thousands of people did this it would wipe them out."
Metrowater spokeswoman Sharon Buckland says the company is prepared to accept the brick cheque but if people are concerned about there bills are welcome to discuss them with Metrowater.
