Friday April 7, 1999 Anti-Metrowater meeting
Anti-Metrowater campaigners' call to get Auckland City Council to abolish the water company have been backed at a public meeting in Avondale.About 70 people attended last week's meeting run by the Water Pressure Group. Group member Jim Gladwin, City Vision councillor Marie Leadbeater and Mt Albert Alliance candidate Jill Ovens all spoke at the meeting.
Ms Leadbeater opposes the existence of Metrowater while Ms Ovens is participating in the wastewater bill boycott. Councillor Phil Raffills declined to an invitation to speak at the meeting.
The meeting endorsed the Water Pressure Group's call on councillors to disestablish Metrowater and return water services to the direct control of council in this years annual plan.
They also resolved to reject City Vision's wait and see plan to dismantle the company and urge them to lead other councillors to abolish Metrowater now.
