PUBLIC MEETING CALLS FOR METROWATER ABOLITION
A well attended public meeting in Avondale last night, resulted in a unanimous resolution calling on the Auckland City Council to dump
Metrowater Limited - the unpopular water services company.A second unanimous resolution saw a solid rejection of the City Vision
"wait and see" two-stage plan to dismantle the company, instead calling on the City Vision Councillors to take a strong lead to abolish Metrowater now.Water Pressure Group member Jim Gladwin, Alliance Parliamentary Candidate for Mt Albert Jill Ovens, and City Vision Councillor Maire Leadbeater all gave addresses critical of commercialised water and warning of the ultimate dangers of privatisation. As well, Maire Leadbeater maintained her determination to oppose the existence of Metrowater beyond the next budget period of 1 July, while Jill Ovens announced that she is participating in the wastewater bill boycott along with the Water Pressure Group.
Councillor Phil Raffills had declined an invitation to attend the meeting as a speaker: "No way Hose!" he had replied, "I have spoken to all sorts of groups but yours is one that is not renowned for listening."
Dozens of people stayed behind after the lively meeting and joined up with the Water Pressure Group, to assist with the campaign of civil
disobedience aimed at dumping Metrowater.
