MEDIA STATEMENT 11 JULY 1999

The Water Pressure Group today carried out a further successful
re-connection, in it's campaign to have Metrowater abolished, and water
services returned to the control of Auckland City Council.

About one hundred people were present at Grey Street, Onehunga, when the
roadway was dug up, the water main excavated, and pipework reconnected. The
family in Grey Street are among the many who are boycotting wastewater
payments. Rather than carry out the usual procedure of shutting the supply
off at the meter,  Metrowater dug up the main in early June, and hacksaw
through pipe fittings in an effort to frustrate any attempt at
re-connection.

Earlier, a motorcade advertised the event by loud speaker, and people of
all ages were present. The first pickaxe blow at the bitumen surface of the roadway was
struck by a woman member of the Water Pressure Group who is a sprightly
seventy-plus years of age.

Throughout the operation, the Water Pressure Group turn-on squad used road
cones, and took safety precautions.

It has been rumoured that tonight the members of the Grey St family of five
are all taking long, hot showers.
