MEDIA STATEMENT 15 JULY 1999
If You make Decisions Which Affect Our Lives - We'll Make decisions Which
Affect Yours! An urgent public meeting, has been called by the Water Pressure Group, this
Sunday, 18 July, at the Mt Eden War Memorial Hall, from 2pm to 4pm.For breaking her promise of "genuine consultation", and ignoring the
submissions of over 15,000 citizens who called for Metrowater Ltd to be
abolished and returned back to Auckland City Council control as a
non-profit Stand Alone Business Unit (S.A.B.U.), the Mayor, Christine
Fletcher will face a "no confidence" motion, and a call for her immediate
resignation. For breaking their election promises to abolish or scrap Metrowater, by
voting on 22 June against disestablishing Metrowater, Auckland City
Councillors Gray Bartlett, Jon Olsen, and Victoria Carter, will also face
"no confidence" motions, and calls for their immediate resignations. The Mayor, and these Councillors have been invited to attend this meeting,
as their reputations and integrity are at stake. The moves of no confidence
and the calls for their resignations are unprecedented in recent times.Auckland citizens have had a taste of the power which we have as consumers,
through the wastewater boycott, where our direct action has highlighted the
social inequities caused by commercialised Metrowater Ltd.
Not only will our campaign against commercialised Metrowater Ltd continue
until it is abolished and returned back under
Auckland City Council control, but we intend to extend our power as
consumers by recommending the boycott of the business interests of Mayor
Christine Fletcher, and Councillors Gray Bartlett, Jon Olsen and Victoria
Carter. On Monday 19 July, tjhe Water Pressure Group will start with a picket
outside Gray Bartlett's business premises, Pacific Entertainment, at 82
Symonds Street, from 11am to 1pm, A campaign against people buying his
latest CD will be launvhedWe have had enough of politicians who break their promises with impunity.
For too long, they have got away with it.Not any more.
If politicians are going to break their promises and make decisions which
affect our lives - we will make decisions which affect theirs.
